On our travels over to Taiwan we came across an unusual looking drink. We had no idea what it was called, nor what the little bits floating around inside were. At first glance one could be forgiven for thinking it looks like frog spawn!

Initially we thought it was some kind of fruit pulp, like passionfruit or granadilla. It was one of our foodie friends who correctly informed us it was in fact basil seeds! (Thanks Kevin!) Basil seeds actually come dry in a packet, they expand into chewy spheres when you immerse them in liquid. They are available at most Asian supermarkets, you might find they are called something else – “Tukmaria” or “Sabza”

The taste is unlike anything we had tried before, it doesn’t taste like basil – it has a very subtle delicate taste, almost melon like. The texture is soft and squishy but surprisingly pleasant!

We have also read online that basil seeds are beneficial for health and can help with slimming as the seeds expand, making you feel full. All the more reason to drink it!

Being so cheap and easy to prepare, basil seeds are a great topping to add to your drinks. So here at Bubblelicious Tea we are going to show you how to make your own basil seed drinks!

Soaking basil seeds in warm honey waterStrain seeds from honey water



- Basil Seeds

- Still/Sparkling water/Tea

- Honey

- Bubblelicious Syrup of your choice (We've selected Kiwi and Passionfruit syrups!)


- Sieve

- 500ml glasses

- Ice & fat straws to serve

- Cocktail shaker

- Stirring rod


-         Put about a teaspoon of honey (or sweetener of your choice) into a glass.

-         Fill halfway with warm water and stir honey till dissolved.

-         Put a teaspoon of basil seeds in a mini sieve and rinse.

-         Put seeds into honey water mixture. You will see that they start expanding immediately. Leave to soak for about 2 minutes.

-         Pour about 50ml of Bubblelicious syrup into a cocktail shaker and add about 400ml of still/sparkling water or tea. Add ice. Shake.

-         Drain the basil seeds with the sieve and spoon some into a glass. (One teaspoon of dry Basil seeds should be enough for 2 x 500ml drinks) Pour the cocktail shakers contents into the glass. Top with straw and serve! Feel free to add tapioca, jellies, juice balls, even fresh fruit!
